“In a world of strangers,
we are friends;
In a time of conservatism,
we are dreamers;
In an age of uncertainty,
we are in love.”
I wrote those idealistic and hope-filled words for the front of our wedding invitation in 1982. This past summer, on June 6th, 2014, my husband Michael and I celebrated our 32nd anniversary! And it’s because of his heart, his creativity, and his way of seeing life that I am blessed to say, all three of those statements are still so true today.
But from the many responses I got on Facebook and in person (we celebrated with a three week road trip up and down the West coast – from Oregon to California), it became apparent that our 30+ years of togetherness was often viewed, both enviously and incredulously, as a Herculean achievement of epic proportions.
So what makes a marriage or a partnership work for such a long time?
Certainly the words love, compatibility, compromise, and commitment play a part. Yet many other couples, who start out on the same path get derailed or take a detour and never come back.
What made our marriage different?
In considering the longevity factor of our relationship, I began to look at how scientific hand analysis might reveal a few of those secrets. Hmmm. I wondered if I could apply those same insights to our marriage, and define the elements in OUR hands that complemented each other. What was our secret language?
Why did our souls align with our needs and values? And why were we able to eagerly invest in each other to create such a rich life?

I am going to talk about three key elements that will give you some clue as to how hand analysis might benefit you in YOUR relationships.
Hand Shape
I talked earlier about how “his way of seeing life” was one of the factors that made our marriage successful. Michael has an EARTH hand shape; a square palm and short fingers. In hand analysis, the shape of your hand is a snapshot of your personality and how you approach the world. Earth handed people are mostly uncomplicated, straight-forward, grounded and hard-working.
Family, loyalty and tradition are important to them.
I have an AIR hand shape; a rectangular palm and long fingers. Air handed people are communicators, problem-solvers, and knowledge seekers who have a tendency to live in the world of ideas. (Exactly why I asked all those questions in the first place when I was trying to connect the dots about hand analysis and my marriage!)
Finding someone who is grounded was a perfect complement to my airy nature. Another fit was how family-oriented Michael was. After losing my 34-year old Dad a week before my 11th birthday, I craved a chance to heal my own family wounds. I am so grateful, that our two children have been blessed to spend countless hours with their own Dad as they’ve grown.
HEART LINES – An intimate look at your relationship style
For any relationship to work there has to be a heart connection. In hand analysis, your HEART line (which is the first major horizontal line across your palm, an inch or so below where your fingers attach), is the one that reveals your emotional style of expression. I love the names my colleague, Pamelah Landers has given to them.
• Passionate (Fire)
• Big Heart (Water)
• Hermit (Earth)
• Romantic Idealist (Air)
People will often have two different Heart Lines, which reflect how they express their feelings out in the world (dominant hand), and their inner/personal world (non-dominant hand). I happen to have two of the same – The ROMANTIC IDEALIST.
That means I have a double-dose of putting others first (I’m a great party host!), I love long, meaningful talks, and I can fall into the trap of “thinking” about what I feel, rather than” feeling” it.
Michael has a PASSIONATE heart line on his dominant hand, so he lives in the “now,” loves the finer things in life, and is quite enthusiastic about what makes his heart sing. This again is a wonderfully contrasting and supportive element in our relationship. He helps get me out of my head and into my heart, while I offer some logical perspective about people that might “push his buttons.”
FINGERPRINTS
Lastly, what I think has been an on-going and unbreakable thread in the tapestry of our marriage is the fact that we BOTH have as part of our Life Purpose, “CREATIVE ARTIST IN THE SPOTLIGHT.”
In hand analysis, fingerprints are considered to be the energetic map we all are imprinted with while in the womb. There are four different types: Whorl, Loop, Tented Arch, & Arch.
So depending on which finger or combination of fingers your highest ranked print appears on, that is how you can discover your Soul-Level Life Purpose. But that’s another article!
TWO MINDS, ONE HEART
Both Michael and I have been creative entrepreneurs for most of our married life and often work on projects together. He is a musician, composer, producer, and sound designer. I’m a voiceover artist, writer and producer of interpretive audio tours, and now a soul brand strategist and hand analyst helping other women entrepreneurs “find their creative voice.”
More than thirty years later, I still believe there is a certain amount of luck, magic and serendipity that occurs when two people choose to create a life together. But it’s crucial to truly understand yourself and the path you’re on, and to grow in consciousness by learning your Soul-Level Life Purpose.
Because when that special person shows up, your inner-knowing becomes a powerful ally to help you live the life of your dreams with the person who wants nothing more than to help you make them all come true!
