The Wonderful World of Color
By Heidi Caron-Guay
Can you imagine your surroundings without color?
Just for a moment, close your eyes and picture a place where
you feel tranquil and relaxed. Maybe it’s a sandy beach on a
tropical island that you visited during vacation, a leisurely hike
in the New Hampshire mountains on a crisp fall day or maybe
it’s a sacred space you’ve created in your home. Take in all of
the colors that you see. Now imagine these surroundings without
color. Did you come away with the same yearning to return to
this place of tranquility when the color was removed? Probably not.
We respond on an emotional level to the colors around us. Color
affects our mood. We respond to it with our hearts as well as our heads. Certain colors have the ability to brighten a mood, bring calmness and serenity, encourage independence, and promote passion and affection. Colors can even raise body metabolism and heart rate.
You may have heard of the term “mood decorating”. Today, people tend to decorate their homes according to what they want a specific space to feel like. Mood decorating is just that: creating spaces that express a desired mood or moods as well as incorporating individual style. When redecorating your home ask yourself these questions:
- What kind of look do you want the room to have?
- What type of feeling to you want the room to have?
- What do you want the ambience or mood of the room to be?
